Cake Bake

Mixing bowls at the ready!

By Katie McGill, Fundraising Administrator at Bath Abbey

We’re nearing the big day at Bath Abbey where people from all over Bath will be baking in aid of the Abbey’s Footprint project and two local food charities – FoodCycle and FareShare – at the Great Bath Bake Sale on Saturday 18 October, 1pm to 4pm.

We’ve been overwhelmed with people keen to bake, perhaps inspired by the Great British Bake Off and the fact that this cake sale is in a unique setting, with 15 tables now booked to take part. Local people have been calling and emailing offering to donate cakes on the morning, so we are looking forward to the day to see what arrives at the doors of the Abbey! Now we just need people to get behind us by coming along to buy and eat the cakes!

Over 25 groups, organisations and businesses including St Andrews Primary School, Three Ways School, Bath University, Nibbled Catering, Cakeaway Cupcakes, Norland College and more have reserved tables and will be bringing their best bakes and cakes on Saturday to sell between 1-4pm. We will also have donations from local bakeries and cafes including Made by Ben, Thoughtful Bread Company, Society Café, Ora et Labora which will be sold at a ‘Best of Bath’ table in the Abbey.

Over the last few days, we’ve been working with the Abbey’s Operations team and Visitors’ officer to make the final preparations, organising tables, and planning for the Bertinet Kitchen bread making workshop that will take place in the south transept of the Abbey. Our biggest challenge so far has been to work out is how to cover the floor in the South transept to make sure flour doesn’t get all over the Abbey’s historic stone floor and into the Victorian grating!

Hosting this Bake Sale is a first for the Abbey, so there’s been lots of excitement, recipes being shared and baking parties organised. We are all really looking forward to welcoming everyone to enjoy some homemade treats in support of a good cause. It’s also the first chance for local people to come together in support of the Abbey’s Footprint project, so it has been lovely to have such a positive response.
